ON PROBATION

feature-length documentary in production

SYNOPSIS

Probation officers support their clients with criminal records in changing their lives. Their goal is to help them avoid (further) imprisonment. However, enormous challenges often stand in the way: One client faces eviction, another is threatened with deportation, and yet another struggles with addiction. The social workers help wherever they can, but they often encounter both structural and personal limitations. Sometimes they must transfer a client because the support has reached a dead end. Other times, they become frustrated when a hard-won sense of independence is destroyed by a new prison sentence. When one of their clients “messes up,” they may question the purpose of their work. To keep going, they rely on the advice and encouragement of their colleagues.

Just as their clients' problems vary widely, so do their offenses: One day, they might work with someone who assaulted a fan of a rival soccer club. The next day, with a client who commits robberies to afford drugs. In extreme cases, probation officers deal with sex offenders and murderers.

Clients do not attend sessions voluntarily; they are required to do so if they want to avoid (re)incarceration. Many approach the help with reluctance. Social workers extend a helping hand even if they condemn the crimes. They talk with the client about what led to the offense, highlight the consequences for the victims, and develop strategies to prevent future crimes. Over time, many clients acknowledge their guilt and take responsibility for their actions. Some, however, seem incorrigible, relapse, and commit new offenses. Nevertheless, the probation officers do not give up: appointment by appointment, always hoping for a positive turn.
